Calais Community Hospital Announces Recruitment of Two Respected Physicians to Strengthen Surgical and Pain Medicine Services
CALAIS, Maine — Calais Community Hospital has announced the arrival of two highly respected physicians who will join the organization beginning in September 2026, marking a major step forward in the hospital’s continued rebuilding and growth.
Dr. Aziz Massaad, one of Washington County’s most respected general surgeons, will provide general surgery coverage at Calais Community Hospital three weeks per month. Dr. Rita Ten, a highly regarded pain medicine physician, will join the hospital in a full-time role.
Dr. Massaad has served patients at Down East Community Hospital for decades and is widely known throughout the region for his professionalism, leadership, and commitment to high-quality care. Over the years, he has served in key leadership roles, including Medical Staff President and member of the DECH Board of Directors, while caring for generations of families across Washington County.
Dr. Ten has also been a longstanding leader within the health system, serving as Medical Director of Anesthesia and as a committed supporter of both hospitals.
“This is far more than a staffing update,” said Steve Lail, President and CEO of Down East Community Hospital and Calais Community Hospital. “The addition of Dr. Massaad and Dr. Ten represents a major strategic investment in the future of Calais Community Hospital. Their experience, reputation, and commitment to patient care will strengthen services, improve access, and help reinforce confidence in the hospital across the region.”
Hospital leadership said Dr. Massaad’s arrival will strengthen surgical services, support operating room performance, and help restore patient and provider confidence. Dr. Ten’s addition will expand access to pain medicine services and create new opportunities for outpatient care in the Calais region.
Together, the two physicians bring a powerful message to the community: Calais Community Hospital is rebuilding and investing in long-term clinical excellence.
In the months ahead, hospital leadership will continue preparations to ensure the organization is ready to support a high-performing surgical and pain medicine program when both physicians begin in September 2026.
