On Sunday, November 16, 2025, at approximately 5:58 pm, the State Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to respond to a house fire at 624 Main Street in Meddybemps. The local fire chief reported that there was a strong possibility the homeowner was still inside. When firefighters arrived, they found the home fully engulfed, and the fire had also spread to a vehicle in the driveway. More than a half-dozen fire departments responded, fighting the fire in heavy snow conditions. A team of four State Fire Marshal Investigators arrived on scene and located the remains of an adult inside the home at approximately 8:51 pm. The victim was removed and transported to a local funeral home, where a representative from the Office of Chief Medical Examiner will work to determine the cause of death and confirm the victim’s identity. State Fire Investigators have returned to the scene today to continue their examination and determine the cause of the fire.
