WOODLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS HELP RESTORE NATIVE CHESTNUT TREES ON MEDDYBEMPS LAKE LAND TRUST PROPERTY

Baileyville, Maine – On Thursday, May 15th, students in grades 2-4 from the Woodland Elementary School joined board members of the Meddybemps Lake Land Trust, along with school staff and other volunteers, to plant 40 native American chestnut saplings on the land trust property off the Staples Road in Baileyville. Licensed forester, Brittany Mauricette, led the group as they planted the trees in an area that had been heavily harvested a little over ten years ago. The project is part of a larger initiative to restore the American Chestnut to its native range in the eastern United States. The students will remain involved with the project as they will monitor tree growth and development, pest management, and general health. All trees will be tagged so that students can observe the growth of the actual trees they planted.

The public has generously supported this project with individual donors giving more than $2,500, and an anonymous donor matching that amount. Additional donations are needed to cover expenses and purchase more trees for future plantings. Any amount is appreciated and donors of $100 may have a tree permanently tagged with their name or in honor or memory of someone. Donations may be made on the MLLT website through Donorbox at: https://donorbox.org/meddybemps-lake-land-trust or by check to the MLLT American Chestnut Restoration Project, PO Box 298, Calais, ME 04619. Please indicate if the donation is in honor or memory of someone.

The Meddybemps Lake Land Trust is a 501(c)(3) conservation charitable corporation established in 2015. The mission of the MLLT is to protect and preserve in perpetuity approximately 500 acres of land in and around the Meddybemps Lake watershed. More information can be found on the MLLT website at www.MLLT.org.
