Crash, Box Truck, Cement Truck

On Thursday, January 5, 2023, at approximately 8:05 am, a operated by 22-year-old Manuel Depina-Gonolves of Boston, Massachusetts was traveling southbound on the Turnpike when he struck a fully loaded cement truck from behind at Mile 1 in Kittery. Depina-Gonolves was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated. He suffered severe but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the cement truck 59-year-old Peter Macdonald of South Berwick was not injured. One southbound lane was shut down to traffic so Troopers with the Commercial Vehicles Unit could inspect the vehicles and Troopers from Troop G (the Turnpike) could document the scene. Preliminary investigation indicates speed and following to close were factors in the crash. The lane has been re-opened to traffic. The Maine State Police were assisted on scene by the Kittery Fire Department and the Maine Turnpike Authority Maintenance crews.
