Down East Community Hospital Receives Performance Leadership Awards for Outcomes and Patient Perspectives from Chartis Center for Rural Health

Machias – Down East Community Hospital is pleased to announce it has been recognized with 2022 Performance Leadership Awards for excellence in outcomes and excellence in patient perspective. Compiled by The Chartis Center for Rural Health, the Performance Leadership Awards honor top quartile performance (e.g., 75th percentile or above) among rural hospitals.

DECH CEO, Steve Lail, on the awards, “We are honored to be recognized for the great care we provide the community. We have dedicated staff who pride themselves in providing great care to the rural community they love. We know how important our hospital is and we strive every day to make everybody’s experience the best it can be. Outcomes are tied to low readmission and mortality rates. Part of reaching those positive results is linked to improving communication with patients and their families that ensures they have the information and resources they need when they leave the facility. Receiving the performance award in Patient Perspective is tied to to our vision statement that “every patient experience will be excellent”. That is what we strive for every day. Both awards are a testament to the staff here at Down East Community Hospital.”

The Performance Leadership Awards are based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX™, the industry’s most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance. INDEX data is trusted and relied upon by rural hospitals, health systems with rural footprints, hospital associations and state offices of rural health across the country to measure and monitor performance across several areas impacting hospital operations and finance.

“Although the last two years have placed unprecedented pressure on the rural health safety net, the dedication to serving the community that we’re so accustomed to seeing from rural hospitals across the country hasn’t wavered,” said Michael Topchik, National Leader, The Chartis Center for Rural Health. “Let us celebrate the power of rural on National Rural Health Day and honor the facilities working tirelessly to provide access to high quality healthcare services to their communities.”
