School that suffered extensive damage catches fire again
BATH, Maine (AP) — An elementary school that sustained heavy fire damage, forcing the cancellation of classes, is on fire again. Flames were seen coming from the roof of the Dike Newell School as firefighters tried to douse the flames Monday morning. The school, which serves pre-kindergarten through second grade, was closed because of the earlier fire. The first fire raged late Friday and early Saturday before being doused, and it was deemed to be suspicious. A 30-year-old man was arrested and jailed on charges with burglary and arson.

PFAS researchers question residents about water use
LIMESTONE, Maine (AP) — Researchers exploring the presence of so-called forever chemicals around the former Loring Air Force Base are asking residents how they use the local waters. A contractor, Wood Environment and Infrastructure, will interview residents of Limestone, Caswell and Caribou about water used for swimming, farming and fishing, along with drinking water from private wells. Officials are concerned that PFAS contamination from firefighting foam used on Loring’s runway may have spread elsewhere.

Police make arrest following fire that damaged school
BATH, Maine (AP) — Police have made an arrest following a suspicious fire that damaged an elementary school in Bath, Maine. Police said a 30-year-old man was arrested by the fire marshal’s office and local police Saturday evening. The man was jailed on Sunday, and it was unclear if he had an attorney. Two firefighters were treated for injuries while battling the fire that started late Friday at Dike Newell School. The school’s principal said damage was “extensive.”

Portland airport’s main runway reopens, ending disruptions
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The main runway at Portland International Jetport is back in operation, ending some disruptions during construction. The runway reopened three days ahead of schedule on Friday, allowing resumption of normal flight patterns and a restoration of the airport’s instrument landing system. During the closure, flights were using a shorter runway and some had to be diverted during times of poor visibility. The $13.7 million project that began April 18 called for repaving the 7,200-foot runway and installing new LED lighting.

Police: Maine man wanted for wife’s death found dead in car
NEW VINEYARD, Maine (AP) — Maine State Police say a man was discovered dead in his vehicle after fleeing from officers who were attempting to arrest him for killing his wife. Officials said 43-year-old Wilfred Daggett Jr., of New Vineyard, died on Friday, a little more than a year after the death of his wife, Collette Daggett. Wilfred Daggett called police last June to report that his vehicle became submerged and his wife needed medical assistance. Her body found on the shoreline of a pond in New Vineyard. Police have not said how she died.
