Millions in aid coming to lobster harvesters, other fishers

TRUMP-CHINA-LOBSTERS

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine lobster harvesters will be among those who benefit from more than a half billion dollars in federal relief for fishers who have been disrupted by trade hostilities with China. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue said Wednesday that his department is providing about $530 million to “support the U.S. seafood industry and fishermen impacted by retaliatory tariffs from foreign governments.” Perdue says in a statement that the aid is meant to make sure U.S. fishermen won’t suffer due to the country’s trade imbalances. President Donald Trump’s trade war with China has been a disaster for the U.S. lobster industry, which lost a huge customer base in the fight.
