9th Annual Turkey-A-Thon Best Yet - Nov. 05, 2013

Washington County, Maine -- The people of Washington County proved their generosity once again with the donation of more than $30,000 - which equates to over 2,500 turkeys - in the 9th Annual Turkey-A-Thon.

The fundraiser, which is held each year to ensure that Washington County families have a healthy holiday meal, was co-sponsored by Washington County: One Community (WC:OC) and WQDY Classic Hits 92.7/95.3. Each $12 donation guaranteed a turkey. Gift certificates for the turkeys will be supplied to the county's food pantries for distribution.

The Turkey-A-Thon is the largest fundraiser for area food pantries. The number of food pantry clients continues to increase and the cost to provide the needed food has tripled since 2007. This boost at the beginning of the winter months is crucial.

Sara McConnell, of WC:OC, said that money is still arriving but this year's generosity has already topped last year's by about $7,000. "At a time when a majority of families here in Washington County are struggling to make ends meet, this overwhelming outpouring of support is very heart warming."

Donations were around $23,000 in 2012 and when the final numbers are tallied this year we will be over $30,000.

Jeff Demmons of Classic Hits 92.7/95.3 said, "This year's Turkey-A-Thon donations will go a long way to helping put a healthy meal on the tables of many Washington County families over the holidays."

Sara and Jeff would like to thank all the civic organizations, schools, clubs, individuals and businesses that make the Turkey-A-Thon one of their annual projects, along with the area businesses that hosted this year's event. All money raised will be spent at Washington County businesses and given to Washington County food pantries to be distributed to Washington County families.

Volunteers for WC:OC and Classic Hits were at 7 sites across the county on Friday, October 25th, collecting cash for the effort.

Organizers would like to thank everyone for their generosity and recognize some of the donors with large contributions. Down East Community Hospital: 169 turkeys, Calais Regional Hospital: 208 turkeys; Regional Medical Center in Lubec: 50 turkeys, Dr. Peter Wilkinson: 60 turkeys, Coastal Enterprise: 42 turkeys, Eastport Port Authority: 75 turkeys, Cooke Aquaculture: 42 turkeys, and US Customs and Border Protection: 42 turkeys.

Students at several local schools also made a huge difference in collecting turkeys including: Rose M. Gaffney, Shead High School, Eastport Elementary, Woodland High School, Calais Jr./High School, The EdGe Program, University of Maine at Machias, and Washington County Community College.

The Calais location was assisted by the Calais Rotary Club in keeping track of donations and totals from all 7 locations.

At the close of our live ten-hour broadcast ay V.L. Tammaro in Calais , Classic Hits' Jeff Demmons was sprayed in a festive way by some fans.
