DNR: Deer Warning On Highway 1 Between St. Stephen and Saint John, NB - Jan. 12, 2013

The Department of Natural Resources is advising motorists traveling Highway 1 between St. Stephen and Saint John to be extra cautious of deer on the highway. Deer have recently been reported on both fenced and non-fenced sections of the highway.

In fenced sections, deer have become trapped between the fencing and DNR staff have been successful in herding a number of deer back through wildlife gates.

Several deer have been killed recently in collisions with motor vehicles.

DNR also reminds motorists that changes to the Motor Vehicle Act as of Jan. 1, 2013, require drivers who are on the same side of a road or highway to slow down and proceed with caution when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle exhibiting a flashing red light. On highways with two or more lanes of traffic, in addition to slowing down and proceeding with caution, the driver shall move over into another lane if it can be done safely

Motorists who violate these new provisions will receive a fine of $292.50 and lose three points off their driver's license.
