A fire of suspicious origin had burned through the vacant two-story house  24-hours earlier.

"This was a rekindle," Interim Fire Chief Dale Purton told WQDY NEWS on Wednesday.

"The fire had made its way upstairs and we found a couple of spots. The smoke had leveled out so it looked worse than it was."

The structure on Swan Street near Lincoln, is an old house with lots of places for fire to hide.

"This was a hard one to fight. An awful lot of digging to get at it because it's been rebuilt so many times. It's just tear the layers off until you get to it," Purton said.

Tuesday's fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal.

When firefighters responded Tuesday morning, they had heavy fire showing on a wrap-around porch and also the first floor of the building. Mutual aid came from St. Stephen, New Brunswick as well as Baileyville. Calais Fire EMS also responded.
