Stage East and the Magnificent Liars will present Sarah Ruhl’s “Dear Elizabeth” to open the 2020 production season. The play chronicles the friendship between poets Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell over thirty years, and is composed entirely of excerpts from their published letters.
Eastporters Brian Schuth and Jenie M. Smith portray the poets. The production, in rehearsal since November, will be staged in the former band room at Shead High School. The actors will play close to the audience in this very intimate setting, echoing the friendship between Bishop and Lowell.
“Dear Elizabeth” will be performed February 14, 21,and 22 at 7:00 p.m., and February 16 and 23 at 3:00 p.m.. Saturday, February 15, ther performance begins at 8:00 p.m., so that attendees may enjoy dinner at Eastport Arts Center’s International Dinner at 6:00, prior to the performance. Tickets are $12 for adults, $4 for those under 18. Tickets are available at stageeast.org. There is limited seating for each performance, so those interested are encouraged to purchase tickets early.
