Fire In Downtown Calais Destroyed A Pub And Displaced Tenants

We received a call at 8:50 pm for a structure fire at 445 Main St., a restaurant and night club with apartments that housed 8 families. Arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and fire in the bar on the first floor. Fire was knocked down and tenants were evacuated. We had mutual aid from St. Stephen, Alexander, Baileyville, Princeton, and Charlotte. We were assisted by Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol, Baileyville PD, and the State Police with Traffic control. Calais Police contacted the Red Cross to assist the tenants with housing. No injuries and the Fire Marshal’s Office has been called to assist with finding the cause. No further information at this time.

CALAIS, Maine (WQDY) — A fire in downtown Calais Sunday evening

destroyed a Pub and drove several tenants from their upstairs apartments.
Calais Fire Chief Ken Clark told WQDY NEWS the call came in at 8:49 pm.
“Upon arrival, we had heavy smoke coming from the business called The Roost.
The crew made the initial attack and got it knocked down.
We evacuated the
four floors above it and we called Fire Marshal in to do a further investigation.
“The building is owned by Carl Bailey, but the business was closed for (Sunday).
The were apartments on the upper floors and everyone made it out safely.
“The Red Cross has been called and they’re going to be coming in to help the
displaced tenants.”
“The problem is we have a shutdown going on at the mill so all of our motels are filled. We’ve gotten permission to open our Rec Center for this evening to give the people a place to stay for the night but the Red Cross will be taking care of it,” Clark said.
Calais and St. Stephen automatically respond to each other’s community whenever there’s a structure fire.
Sunday night, several other communities responded to Calais on mutual aid to supplement them and St. Stephen.
“With the low number of firefighters everywhere we ended up calling in departments from
Baileyville, Princeton, Charlotte and Alexander for coverage. It takes time to get the people here.”
“Being shorthanded as we are, we have a good crew that got here quick and got it knocked down quick, and thankfully they did,” Clark said.
