Ex-trooper who was never disciplined pleads guilty to abuse

An ex-Maine state police trooper pleaded guilty to domestic violence assault, though he was never disciplined after his ex-wife informed his supervisor of the abuse. The Portland Press Herald reports Justin Cooley pleaded guilty to the charge on Wednesday. The 50-year-old received a 364-day suspended sentence and a justice ordered him not to drink alcohol or have contact with is ex-wife. In May 2019, she reported to Cooley’s supervisors that he had thrown a bottle at her and hit her. The supervisors did not immediately file charges and Cooley was allowed to resign in January without being disciplined. An attorney for Cooley said he had received treatment for alcoholism and was ready to serve his sentence.
