Powerful winds buffet New England, knock out power in Maine

 

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A powerful storm with gusts topping 60 mph has swept through coastal New England, knocking out electricity for more than 100,000 homes and businesses in Maine. Officials say the wind gusted Monday evening to 63 mph in Cape Elizabeth, 61 mph in Eastport and 58 mph in Bangor. Mike Cempa from the National Weather Service says the storm dropped more than 3 inches of rain on some locations. The rain  began falling steadily on Monday and the wind grew during the evening.
