Protesters arrested after tense demonstration in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A second day of protests over police treatment of people of color swelled to more than 1,000 people in Portland, Maine. The protesters blocked roads and engaged in a tense standoff with officers Monday night.

Several people were arrested for failure to disperse and remnants of protesters remained until early Tuesday. The protest was much larger than a demonstration Sunday that drew 300 people.

On Monday, the demonstration started with about 500 people who chanted and marched down Commercial Street. It had grown much larger by the time police began pushing the crowd back. Protesters threw water bottles at the officers.
