MACHIAS – A winter outdoor fun day is planned for 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on
Saturday, Feb. 29 in Middle River Park and the Machias Bay Chamber of
Commerce train station, weather permitting.

The event will feature tubing, cardboard sled races, hiking,
snowshoeing, cross country skiing, outdoor games and more.

It is a  collaborative effort between the Downeast Coastal Conservancy,

The events are not just for experienced winter athletes.

Students from UMM’s outdoor recreation program will be on hand to provide instruction
and assistance for those new on skis or snowshoes.

There will also be a bonfire with smores and hotdogs, a warming center inside the train
station, as well as hot cocoa and warm cider.

Down East Community Hospital will also be on hand to offer winter safety tips.
New this year are cardboard sled races on the Elephant’s Trunk hill in
Middle River Park at noon.

Winners will receive medals in the age
categories: 0-7, 8-11, 12-16, and the family sled. A special medal will
be awarded to the most creative sled. Only cardboard, duct tape and
paint can be used for construction. Register your “sled” by calling
