Adrienne Bennett, former gov spokeswoman, running for 2nd CD

BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Former Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s press secretary has formally announced her candidacy for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District.

Adrienne Bennett, of Bangor, will face off in a June primary with at least one other Republican challenger, former state Sen. Eric Brakey.

The 40-year-old Bennett, a former TV reporter, said in a statement Tuesday that she grew up poor and developed a strong work ethic. She put herself through college and had a career in the news business before she accepted an offer from LePage to be his press secretary.

The seat is currently held by Democratic Rep. Jared Golden, who was elected in 2018 in the first congressional election decided by ranked-choice voting.
